Domestic abuse

What is domestic abuse and controlling behaviour?

This is when someone uses threats, bullying or violence. It can also be when someone controls people through money, decides what they wear, where they go and who they see. If somebody in your family uses bullying or violence to get another adult to do what they want, that's domestic abuse.

If your boyfriend or girlfriend is under 16 and is being abusive such as making you do something sexual when you don't want to, or making you watch sexual material on the internet or television. This is relationship abuse.

Where can it happen?

It can happen in any family or relationship. It might not always be obvious this is happening. It can be very hard to deal with but remember that it's never your fault. If you live in a house where domestic abuse is happening this can be very upsetting and impact on your own well-being even if you do not see it happen.

If you’re experiencing domestic abuse it is very important to have a safe place that you can go to and a person you can trust that you can contact. It is important that you call 999 if you or someone else is at risk.
