NEET (Not in Education Employment or Training)

NEET (Not in Education Employment or Training)

If you are aged 16–19 and not in education, employment or training (NEET), or are at risk of becoming NEET, you can access support from Connexions, which provides careers information, advice and guidance to help you move towards education, training or employment.

We know that confidence, emotional wellbeing and mental health can affect education, employment and training. Looking after your wellbeing is an important part of achieving your goals and reaching your potential.

  • Create a CV – A document that highlights your skills, qualifications, experience and achievements to help employers, colleges or training providers learn more about you.
  • Prepare for Interviews – Research common interview questions, practise your answers and think about examples that show your skills and strengths.
  • Get Careers Advice – Speak to a careers adviser if you’re unsure about your next steps or need help exploring your options.
  • Research Your Choices – Look into courses, apprenticeships, training providers and employers to find the right fit for you.
  • Know Your National Insurance Number – You’ll usually need this when applying for jobs, apprenticeships or starting work.
  • Have the Right ID Ready – Employers and training providers may ask for proof of identity, such as a passport, birth certificate or driving licence.
  • Plan Your Travel – Check how you will get to work, college, training or interviews and what the costs will be.
  • Consider Your Finances – Find out if you are eligible for travel support, bursaries or other financial assistance.
  • Build Your Experience – Volunteering, work experience and extracurricular activities can help you develop valuable skills and confidence.
  • Ask for Help Early – If you’re struggling or feeling unsure, speak to a trusted adult, careers adviser or support service as soon as possible.

Support

If you need support to build your confidence, develop employability skills, create a CV, search for opportunities or prepare for interviews, there are a range of local and national organisations and services that can help you take your next steps. If you are in school or college, you can speak to your school or college careers adviser for support.

You can also seek support from: 

STEP-UP – Wakefield Council  Free employment and skills service. They can support young people aged 16–24 with CV writing, interview preparation, confidence building, finding apprenticeships, training and employment opportunities, and developing skills.

Shaw Trust – Includes supported internships for young people aged 16–24 with an EHCP

National Careers Service – free government-funded service that provides careers information, advice and guidance to help people make decisions about learning, training and work

Prospects – careers website aimed mainly at students, college leavers, university students and graduates.

Careers Explorer – Heart of Yorkshire Education Group – a free online tool that helps you explore different careers, local job opportunities, salaries and training routes

The Kings Trust – supports young people aged 16–30 to build confidence, develop skills and move into education, training or employment.
